How to sample grape leaves

This is a step by step method for collection of plant leaves.  Sampling and testing leaves at critical stages of vine and grape development are important for getting the most out of your yield.  https://pubs.extension.wsu.edu/vineyard-nutrient-management-in-washington-state-replaces-pnw622-publication is a great resource for understanding all the benefits of proper soil nutrition and plant health.

Step 1.1 Bloom

For Bloom - select a leaf that is opposite of the cluster but on a fruiting shoot.  This should be a fully mature leaf. collect at least 4 leafs from the vine.

Step 1.2 Véraison 

Collect a fully mature leaf 3 to 4 leafs up from the secondary cluster.  The ideal is to pick a leaf that would have been similar to one picked during bloom.  Collect at least 4 leaves from the same plant.

Step 2.0 Wash leaves and Shake Dry

The leaves will need to be washed using RO or distilled/DI water and shaken dry prior to packaging. It is ok if the leave is still wet when placed in the sample bag.

Step 3 Label bag and order form

Use your own ziplock bag or one of ours with a label that clearly defines the sample you wish to have analyzed.  You'll need to give it an ID that corresponds with the location where the sample was taken.  Please fill out the chain-of-custody form with details of the plant, varietal, location and ID.
